27/08/2010 - New Digs Prove An Ideal Fit

For geophysical services company Geokinetics Australia, refocusing its operations onshore demanded bigger digs.

The Australian arm of a US based firm which provides onshore and offshore geophysical data collection services to the oil, gas and mining industries has set up its new headquarters at an office/warehouse at 601 Curtin Ave East, Pinkenba.

The company's purchasing, logistics and procurement manager Brian Merriman said their previous home at nearby Virginia was too small.

"We ran up until now only marine crews and they worked off the coast of Western Australia, Africa, Bangladesh or wherever," he said.

" So in Australia we had eight people of which four constantly travelled overseas and we only needed an office with four rooms. But now we have come onshore in Australia and picked up some contracts.....we will have a staff of 100."

Negotiated through Raine & Horne Commercial's Phil Heggie, Geokinetics is paying about $148,000 a year on a three year lease with a three year option on the 1,000sqm property.

The single-level property has a 60 per cent office component while warehouse space is configured as an electronics repair and manufacturing facility.

"We obviously had to find something that was large enough to accommodate the extra staff," Mr Merriman said.

"We were thinking of moving to Toowoomba but most of us lived in Brisbane and this property was near the airport and we have a lot of people fly in from the States."

"We are also importing a lot of equipment, so it's handy to be somewhere near the Port of Brisbane."

Mr Heggie said that Geokinetics was on an assignment lease.

The company that previously occupied the property underwent a restructure and was forced to leave. The property was on the leasing market for eight to nine months.

Mr Heggie said the property was hard to lease because it was "unusual".

"It's not your average office/warehouse," he said.

"The high office content and the warehouse space which is configured as an electronic repair facility, is a little unusual, but suited Geokinetics right to the ground."
