Suburb Summary
Stafford –almost 9km from CBD, predominantly residential. Stafford City Shopping Centre (on Stafford Road) has over 75 specialty shops, all on one level.
Enoggera – 6km from CBD. Rail/bus interchange, light industrial precinct on Pickering Street. Numerous retail shops and modern eateries front main roads. Suburb played important role in Brisbane's development, with Enoggera Reservoir and major transport routes. Home to one of Australia’s largest Army barracks.
Newmarket – 5km from CBD. Older, mostly residential suburb, increasing in popularity with rise in inner-city demand. Locals shop at Newmarket Shopping Centre, featuring a supermarket, health services and speciality shops catering to a well-heeled crowd. Excellent public transport and access to major roads. Enoggera Road is a six-lane arterial road, radiating out from the CBD, passing through the middle of the suburb from Enoggera Creek in the south, to Alderley in the north. Newmarket Road also serves the local area, providing an east-west connector between Enoggera Road and Lutwyche Road at Windsor.
Kelvin Grove –4km from CBD. Primarily residential, hilly, with tree-lined streets. Some commercial and light industrial activities along main thoroughfare, Kelvin Grove Road. Also the location of Kelvin Grove Campus of the Queensland University of Technology. Completion of Kelvin Grove Urban Village, with its apartments, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and cafes has added to the area’s popularity.
Everton Hills – about 12km from CBD, extends northwest from Everton Park, located at the edge of the Bunyaville Forest Reserve.
Everton Park – about 8km from CBD. Mainly residential, with several retail services along South Pine Road, including the North-West Homemaker Centre. A community-based shopping centre with supermarket and specialty stores at intersection of South Pine and Stafford Roads. South Pine Road, a major transport corridor, runs through the suburb, towards Brisbane. Public transport is good. Rail travel from Mitchelton, Gaythorne and Enoggera train, about 5 to 10 minutes by car.
Keperra – about 9km north-west of CBD. Great Western Shopping Centre is at the intersection of Settlement and Samford Roads. A large quarry sits to the east and south-east of the centre. Mining activities still in operation, but plans to convert area into a housing estate. Conversion would result in shopping centre’s expansion. Brisbane Institute of Tertiary and Further Education (TAFE) Grovely Campus is located within Keperra. Keperra and Grovely railway stations provide access to regular Citytrain services to Ferny Grove, Brisbane and Beenleigh. Brisbane Transport offers bus services.
Grovely - A locality within the suburb of Keperra (above). Grovely Station is on the Ferny Grove Line, part of the QR Citytrain network.
Alderley – about 7km from CBD. An older suburb comprising several warehouses, a police station and community-based shopping complex anchored by a national supermarket chain.
Ashgrove – 4km north-west of CBD. Leafy, comparatively affluent residential suburb characterised by hilly terrain and characteristic Ashgrovian houses built early 20th century. Ashgrove contains the neighbourhood of Ithaca, home of the Broncos football club, and Ithaca campus of Brisbane North Institute of TAFE. Features a variety of multicultural restaurants and shopping amenities. Serviced by multiple council buses.
Ferny Hills - an outer suburb almost 15km north-west of CBD, part of the Moreton Bay Region local government area. Almost entirely residential. Ferny Grove railway station is on the south-western boundary.
Michelton – 8km from CBD, with some parts only 6km from CBD. A growing suburb with many Queenslander style houses and leafy streets. Quite hilly, most of the suburb is on a north-facing slope. Features many shops, schools and facilities, such as the Brookside Shopping Centre. Oxford Park railway station and Mitchelton railway station provides access to regular Citytrain services to Ferny Grove, Brisbane and Beenleigh.
Wilston – about 3km from CBD. A mix of old and new, home to many professionals, including medical professionals, due to inner city location and proximity to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. Area was transformed by revamping of Kedron Brook Road, an early pre-cursor to City Council’s massive urban renewal process. Resulted in the evolution of a vibrant hub of al-fresco dining. Good public transport, with Wilston train station and regular bus routes.
Chermside West – a well established suburb about 10km from CBD. Close to Prince Charles and Holy Spirit Hospitals, and Westfield Shoppingtown Chermside.
Albany Creek – about 17km from Brisbane’s CBD, a major suburban service centre within the Moreton Bay Regional Council, featuring fast food restaurants, bus interchange, two large shopping centres and smaller shopping facilities along Albany Creek Rd. Nearest railway station is Strathpine.
Grange – about 5km from CBD. Rejuvenated in the last decade by young families. Local shops are Grange Convenience Centre and Grange Terminus, both on Days Road.
